Count On Us Commonwealth Games study

On 23rd July 2014 Glasgow will open the City to athletes from around the world as hosts of the 20th Commonwealth Games. With 4 years to go work is already underway to ensure a lasting legacy from this major event.

During the 11 days of competition elite athletes from the 54 member Commonwealth Countries will battle it out for the honour of being a Commonwealth medallist in one of the 17 chosen sports which range from Track and Field events to Swimming, Lawn Bowls and even Rugby 7s.

To ensure the games are a success planning has already begun in earnest including a study of the City transport systems. The City transport will need to accommodate both athletes and visitors travelling in and out of the many event venues spanning the city including the SECC, Hampden Park and Ibrox as well as a number of Leisure Centres and even the City streets for the Marathon event.

Count On Us are pleased to be involved in planning for the event, having recently been appointed to conduct traffic and bus passenger surveys for the provision of data to feed into a Spectator Access Model and modelling of the proposed Games Route Network. The work is being conducted during July and August to provide an accurate representation of traffic at the time the games are due to be held.

The study includes Manual Classified Turning Counts to collect information around the games venues of SECC, Scotstoun and Hampden Park together with studies of key junctions on the games route network. The bus passenger counts focus on key routes to and from all central Glasgow venues. The studies include camera surveys and on street bus observations.

Brian McArdle Regional Director for Count On Us in Scotland commented “The Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow is a great boost for the City and we are delighted to be involved in the transport planning for this prestigious event.”
