Astucia - Traffic Management using Intelligent Road Studs
Location
Australia, Adelaide, Southern Expressway
Application
Delineation and Traffic Management
Product
Astucia Intelligent Road Studs, mains powered
The Problem
The Southern Expressway is a 3 lane, one-way reversible motorway which feeds traffic from the Adelaide Hills to and from the City. It is a reversible road in the sense that it changes direction around midday and midnight to accommodate the AM and PM peak directions.
Two different traffic management issues arose, firstly to assist and to reinforce the morning peak traffic flow and secondly, to improve afternoon peak traffic entering the motorway.
The Solution
Firstly a line of 30 white Intelligent Road Studs were installed to provide delineation across the normal lane lines from the Southern Expressway to Marion Road and to assist and to reinforce the morning peak traffic flow.
Secondly, a line of 30 red Intelligent Road Studs were installed to assist afternoon peak traffic entering the motorway at Marion Road. The purpose of the line of red embedded studs is to discourage motorists from changing lanes until they are further along the motorway where their speeds are more compatible with traffic already on the motorway travelling at 80kph and where the sight distance is better.
Benefits
- Increased effeciveness and efficiency of the motorway
- Safely increasing the capacity
- Reducing driver frustration due to queuing
Testimonial
Peter Doupe from Astucia Australia commented: "With such a high volume of traffic in this region it is important the traffic flows safely and smoothly. We are delighted to be able to help in ensuring positive traffic movement in this area."
